The Thyroid–Red Light Connection

Explore the science behind red light therapy for thyroid health and cellular recovery.

Living with thyroid dysfunction and still searching for answers about your energy and well-being? Discover why researchers are investigating light therapy as a potential addition to thyroid care, and what human studies can tell us about its possibilities. Russell Brand co-hosts the full session alongside Jonathan Otto, asking the questions you’d ask.

What the human studies measured

Seven questions thyroid patients ask. Tap the one that's yours.

Human trials on thyroid dysfunction and hypothyroidism sit behind this session. Tap a topic to see what the researchers found and what Jonathan will cover. Every figure here comes from published research or a national estimate, and each is labelled.

Fatigue

The sham-controlled thyroid dysfunction trial, measure by measure: what improved at the three-month assessment, by how much, and how the treated group compared with sham.

The trials used targeted near-infrared protocols in clinical settings. Jonathan explains how those protocols compare with home devices. Do not change thyroid medication without your prescribing clinician.

Your host

Jonathan Otto

More than a decade as an investigative journalist and documentary filmmaker, uncovering natural healing protocols and bringing them to millions. He uses red light therapy himself and has studied it closely. He'll walk through the trials and say plainly what each one does and does not prove.

His role on the call
On the call, Jonathan will

Present the evidence

  • Walk through the human trials one at a time, starting with the sham-controlled thyroid dysfunction study
  • Show the exact wavelengths and session lengths the researchers used
  • Compare the clinical devices and protocols with what home products actually deliver
  • Say plainly where the evidence is strong and where it stops

"Trained to treat symptoms, not root causes. That's exactly what their patients desperately need."

Russell Brand

Comedian, author, and broadcaster with an audience of millions, and the reason this session won't be a lecture. Russell has spent years questioning the systems that profit when people stay sick and dependent. He's new to red light therapy, and he'll push Jonathan on the things a skeptic would.

Ask what you'd ask

  • Push back: is this real, or another wellness fad, and how would we know?
  • Ask what this means for someone already on thyroid medication
  • Put live audience questions straight to Jonathan
  • Keep it a conversation, not a lecture

New to red light therapy himself, which is exactly why he's the one asking.

Live Q&A

The questions Russell will put to Jonathan throughout the session. The ones you're already asking.

I'm on levothyroxine. Does any of this apply to me?

Jonathan walks through the medication findings and what they could mean for a conversation with your prescribing clinician.

Is it safe to shine light on my thyroid?

What the trials actually did, at what dose and for how long, what the six-year follow-up reported, and why a clinical laser protocol is not the same as a home panel.

My labs are "normal" but I feel terrible. Now what?

TSH-only testing, the undiagnosed majority, and the questions worth taking to your next appointment.
What you’ll discover

Understand the research. Explore the possibilities. Make more informed decisions.

In this webinar we unpack the human research on thyroid function and fatigue, explore the cellular processes scientists are studying, and explain what these findings could mean for conversations with your healthcare provider.
How ten wavelengths reach the neck and thyroid, which sits 1 to 2 cm under the skin. The trials used 830 and 850 nm near-infrared laser under clinical protocols; Jonathan explains how that compares with home devices.

1

What a placebo-controlled trial revealed about targeted near-infrared therapy, thyroid antibodies, and medication requirements under medical supervision.

2

What a recent thyroid dysfunction study found when researchers added light therapy to standard treatment: fatigue, sleep, daytime sleepiness and mood at three months.

3

Why scientists are exploring light’s effects on mitochondrial activity and cellular signaling, and how that could relate to thyroid recovery.

4

How the devices, wavelengths and protocols used in clinical research compare with home red light products, and why that gap matters before you buy anything.

5

What to discuss with your healthcare provider before considering light therapy for thyroid concerns, including medication, nodules and lab testing.

What the research shows

Human trials sit behind this session. Here's what three of them measured.

−57%

Fatigue impact vs. −8% with sham treatment

Randomized, sham-controlled study, 60 thyroid dysfunction patients analysed. Six 850 nm sessions alongside levothyroxine improved fatigue, sleep quality, daytime sleepiness and mood more than sham at three months.
Tunç et al., Lasers in Medical Science, vol. 41, art. 62 (2026)

−64%

Lower average levothyroxine dose, laser group vs. placebo, at nine months

Randomized, placebo-controlled trial, 43 patients. Ten 830 nm laser sessions; 38.59 vs 106.88 µg/day, with lower thyroid-peroxidase antibodies and improved ultrasound echogenicity. Medication was adjusted under medical supervision throughout the study.
Höfling et al., Lasers in Medical Science (2013)

6 yrs

Follow-up of the same cohort

The laser-treated group still required less levothyroxine. Antibody levels no longer differed significantly. Three patients in each group developed nodules. The follow-up tracked the original cohort, giving a rare six-year view of durability and safety.
Höfling et al., six-year follow-up (2018)
This webinar is educational. Light therapy is being investigated as a potential addition to thyroid care and should not replace prescribed care. Do not change thyroid medication without your prescribing clinician.
